Digital Signature vs Verified Check-In

Most safety apps capture attendance with an on-screen signature or a typed name. That is a genuine improvement over paper on retrieval and legibility. It is not an improvement on the thing that decides a contested case: whether the record establishes that the named worker was actually there.

The core distinction: documentation vs verification

Documentation records that something was entered. Verification produces evidence that something occurred. A signature — wet or digital — is documentation. It captures an assertion. Verification captures a fact independent of the assertion: a live photograph of the person, coordinates placing them inside the geofence, and a timestamp sealed at capture.

The device-passing problem

The practical weakness of signature capture is that one device circulates. A foreman holding an iPad can collect fifteen signatures in ninety seconds, and nothing in the record distinguishes fifteen workers signing from one person signing fifteen times. This is the single most common way digital attendance records fail under scrutiny.

What a live photo changes

Requiring a photo at the moment of check-in ties the record to a person rather than to a device. Combined with GPS, it answers who and where together. Neither is inferable from a signature.

Why the cryptographic seal matters
